Description
The original releases of Penfolds Bin 2 in 1960 was an Australian style of Burgundy – typically a soft, medium bodied wine with a shiraz base. This style from Penfolds was temporarily discontinued in the 1970s at the height of the white wine boom. This wine blends Shiraz and Mataro is still relatively uncommon in Australian table wines. First introduced to Australia in the 1830s, Mataro, also known as monastrell or mourvedre is often used in fortified wine production. It is valued by winemakers for its blending attributes, adding complexity and palate grip. Interest in Bin 2 has grown as the popularity of traditional Rhone varieties and blends continues to flourish. Sweet, simple, fruit-driven aromatics lead to a bold, open, plush expression of this famous blend. Raspberry, boysenberry, anise and woodsmoke characters have this wine rollicking along in fine, enjoyable style. It will mature well; it pretty much always does. But gosh this is fun right now. – Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front The Finer Details Style – Red Wine Varietal – Shiraz, Mataro Country – Australia Region – McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully Vintage – 2019 Bottle Size – 750ml ABV – 14.5%
