The GlenDronach is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, creating their finest richly sherried single malts for nearly 200 years. The GlenDronach is of true Highland style: a heavy and robust spirit, perfect for a long maturation period in sherry casks. At The GlenDronach Distillery, the current day custodians have carried forth the tradition of founder James Allardice since 1826, maturing the whisky in the finest Spanish Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso sherry casks from Andalucía. Port pipes are usually used to ‘finish’ Scotch whiskies, so this full-term Port matured Glendronach is a novelty for a distillery that’s built a reputation on bold sherried expressions. In this example, it’s as though the Port has almost completely dissolved into Glendronach’s more familiar notes, coating the barley with a light glaze of red berry sweetness, the overall effect is something akin to whisky-soaked plum pudding.
