Sitting at 45ppm—the same peat level of Laphroaig!—the makers of Nagahama Roman Beer, on the shores of Shiga prefecture’s Lake Biwa, kicked off their whisky distillery in late 2016 with two 400-Litre Alembic stills from Portuguese fabricators Hoga Stills and utilizing the wort, mash-tun and other equipment already in place at their brewery. Japanese whisky for the Ardbeg or Laphroaig lover, this is all campfire smoke on the nose with the typical Japanese whisky characters of pear, melon, nuts and honey.
