Benjamin Leroux Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs 2023

Description
From a perfectly placed vineyard on Gevrey’s northern slope, En Champs bridges the generosity of village Gevrey-Chambertin with the finesse of its neighbouring Premier Cru sites. Lying just below Champeaux and beside Brochon, this limestone-rich lieu-dit enjoys cool airflows and excellent drainage, yielding Pinot Noir of clarity and mineral drive. Its east-facing aspect captures the morning sun, preserving freshness and precision even in warmer years. In 2023, Benjamin Leroux bottled En Champs separately to highlight its distinct terroir and near–Premier Cru pedigree. The old vines, deeply rooted in fractured limestone and clay, produce small, concentrated berries that bring both richness and fine-grained structure. Fermentation included around 40% whole clusters for floral lift and spice, with gentle extraction and cool maceration maintaining purity and tension. Élevage took place in large-format barrels with approximately 20% new oak, adding quiet complexity without weight. Only six barrels were produced, making this one of the most limited wines in Leroux’s cellar. The result is a Gevrey-Chambertin of impressive precision and depth, with layers of red and black cherry, crushed stone, and a long, saline finish. Built for ageing over the next decade, it captures the essence of northern Gevrey, generous, detailed, and effortlessly refined. Tasting NotesNOSE– Dark and lifted.Ripe plum and black cherry with mineral and herbal nuances from whole bunch. PALATE– Structured and fresh.Generous fruit layered with fine tannins, crisp acidity and stony precision. FINISH– Long and mineral.Persistent red and black fruit with chalky grip and northern Gevrey bite. Reviews & AccoladesExtra generosity of plum fruit across the palate, then a few more tannins, but with fine length and structure. There’s an additional degree of class here without a doubt.” – Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy, 91–94 pts Finer Details:Style – Red WineVarietal – Pinot NoirCountry – FranceRegion – Burgundy, Cote de NuitsVintage – 2023Bottle Size – 750mlABV – 13.5%Closure – Cork
