Developing a following over the decades, Zinfandel was first introduced to Cape Mentelle’s Estate vineyard from California in 1974. Only 22 rows planted within 1.15 ha, the dry grown, bush vine Zinfandel can be prone to unruly behaviour. These vines require great attention to detail in their caring including harvesting the fruit 100% by hand. A bright, youthful wine in the glass. The nose is complex – an array of spices meld happily with quality toasty oak, mulberries and plums. There’s nothing shy about it, concentrated and ripe, yet balanced and demanding the next sip. Red raisins, cinnamon and those dark plums also return. It’s a delicious young wine that will live for many years. – The Real Review, 95 Points, on 2017 vintage.
