Description

Product Description: A benchmark Gigondas from some of the oldest vines in the appellation. Domaine Saint-Damien’s Gigondas Vieilles Vignes 2023 is a powerful expression of southern Rhone terroir. Sourced from Grenache planted in 1964 and Mourvedre from 1977, this cuvee reflects both deep-rooted vineyards and the quiet authority of a family estate. The Saurel family has farmed these slopes for generations. Under Romain Saurel, with the influence of the late Philippe Cambie, the domaine continues to define the region’s direction. Fermentation takes place in concrete, followed by ageing in large, seasoned foudres. The process avoids fining and filtration, preserving texture and purity. The result is a Gigondas of structure and clarity, shaped by site rather than cellar. It offers early generosity yet carries the depth and balance to age with grace. This is confident, traditional winemaking, anchored in old vines and honest farming. Tasting Notes NOSE – Dark fruit & garrigue Black cherry, licorice, wild herbs and roasted spice. PALATE – Broad and structured Mid-palate richness with sweet tannins and a savoury, earthy undertow. FINISH – Long and lifted Polished and persistent with Provençal lift and gentle warmth. Reviews & Accolades The 2023 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes offers fabulous notes of black cherries, licorice, roasted garrigue, and peppery Provençal nuances. These all carry to a medium to full-bodied Gigondas offering ample mid-palate depth, sweet tannins, and a great finish.” – Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com, 94–96 points (May 2024) Finer Details: Style – Red Wine Varietal – 80% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre Country – France Region – Southern Rhone Vintage – 2023 Bottle Size – 750ml ABV – 15% Closure – Cork
