Product Description: Tasmania’s Coal River Valley brings a darker, more brooding edge to the Giant Steps Pinot family. The fruit comes from the Nocton Vineyard, planted in 1999 on calcareous sandstone soils just inland from Hobart. Longer daylight hours and the cool maritime climate shape Pinot Noir with density, structure and an unmistakable savoury line. The 2024 harvest was hand-picked in the early morning and transported across Bass Strait to preserve freshness. In the cellar, a mix of whole-bunch and destemmed fruit was fermented before spending eight months in French oak (25% new). The result is a wine that speaks differently to Yarra Valley Pinot—more muscular and deeply fruited, yet still defined by clarity and restraint. Coal River Pinot Noir is the outlier in the Giant Steps range: rich in dark cherry, cola spice and ferrous earth, framed by fine, long tannins and a cool-climate backbone. It’s a wine of presence and longevity, offering a complementary southern voice to the winery’s Yarra classics. Tasting Notes NOSE – Dark & lifted Black cherry, violets and bay leaf, layered with spice, sarsaparilla and woodsmoke. PALATE – Structured & savoury Dense fruit weight of cherry and black tea, with cola spice and undergrowth complexity. FINISH – Long & mineral Fine-grained tannins and saline freshness carry through a long, resonant close. Reviews & Accolades Less floral, more fruit. This brings the polish, the flavour, the seduction. It offers the freshest of red and black cherries with woodsmoke and cedar running through, a touch of mint maybe, semblances of undergrowth, gorgeous length, the tannin almost seeming to blossom itself. Beautiful wine. Complete.” – Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, 95 Points (2025) From the Nocton vineyard in the Coal River Valley… With its aromas of dark fruits, sarsaparilla, violets and bay leaf, this is the big personality in the Giant Steps pinot range! Equally flamboyant on the palate, richly fruited and balanced with ripe, muscular tannins—ensuring this will be long-lived, too.” – Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion, 95 Points (2025) Lifted black cherry aromas with negroni/chinotto/marzipan notes. Richly concentrated and pure-fruited Pinot Noir with intense black cherry, strawberry fruits, chalky/al dente textures, underlying vanilla, grilled nut, saline notes and fresh long juicy acidity. Finishes long and crispy. Beautifully made wine with lovely density and volume.” – Andrew Caillard MW, The Vintage Journal, 96 Points (2025) Finer Details: Style – Red Wine Varietal – Pinot Noir Country – Australia Region – Coal River Valley, Tasmania Vintage – 2024 Bottle Size – 750ml ABV – 13.5% Closure – Screwcap
