There is obviously more weight and intensity here than the Kabinett-level wines, though not necessarily more overt sweetness. Instead, it is a question of more power and therefore wines that are able to stand up to richer food. Here again, we have excellent transparency and expression of place, alongside more savoury depth. In the Joh. Jos. Prüm Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese 2017 vintage, it’s the extraordinary intensity, purity and expression of the wines that hits you first; each vineyard is so expertly articulated. The Badstube is open, bright and red fruited; the Graacher is pure elegance and currently defined by it’s racy, coiled acidity and stony-floral tones; and the Zeltinger is compact and savoury, packed with dense yellow fruit counterbalanced by flavours of stone, blackcurrant leaf and zingy freshness—a baby Wehlener if ever there was one. The Wehlener is as Wehlener does in a great year: a thrilling, mouthcoating wine of juicy citrus and stone fruit tapering to an incredibly long, outstanding finish.
